A BARGE OFF THE COAST IN TURBULENT WATER

Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was in the first decades of the 19th century working as a master draughtsman in Middelburg, in which capacity he has trained a whole generation of local artists. Among them are besides his sons Barend Cornelis and Marinus Adrianus, Johannes and Hermanus also the brothers Johannes Cornelis and Lodewijk Haccou and Cornelis Schimmel. Catalogs from that time regularly mention drawings and watercolours of J.H. Koekkoek. Yet his drawings appear rarely on the art market and also in archives can be only appointed in a modest number.

The catalogus of the collection E.P. Cremer mentioned in lot 6 a watercolour that is very similar to the description of the presented work here: ‘In deze uitvoerige en krachtige teekening ontwaart men, op een gedeelte dijks, een viertal schippersgasten, welke met aandacht en belangstelling uizien naar een hen in een hevige windvlaag voorbij zeilend sprietschip, terwijl zich een dergelijk vaartuig wat verder bevindt. ‘Eene fraaije onstuimige lucht, zoowel als de dunheid en natuurlijkhied des waters, en de meesterlijke behandeling, doen eene uitmuntende uitwerking; in dito (sapverwen) geteekend, door J.H Koekkoek, 1824.’
