A fine and extremely rare map, dated 1583.
Born and bred in Enkhuizen, a Noord-Holland town that enjoyed enormous economic growth during his lifetime, Lucas Jansz. Waghenaer became the foremost important pioneer in the development of better and safer navigation at sea. Little is known about his own career at sea, but in his Spiegel der Zeevaerdt (Mirror of Navigation) he describes himself as ‘a simple citizen and helmsman at sea’. Waghenaer’s pilot books and charts brought about revolutionary changes in the field of European maritime cartography. These publications gave Dutch cartography its worldwide significance.
This map was engraved by the famous Joannes van Deutecum and is dated 1583.
