A REMARKABLE DISCOVERY!!! A TONDO BY JAN PORCELLIS
A Shipping scene
The painting
a shipping scene is an exceptionally early and well-preserved seascape by Jan Porcellis. His innovative style is already clearly recognisable. The emphasis is not so much on the ships as on the elements. Jan Porcellis is considered one of the pioneers of marine painting. His work was decisive for the development of this genre in the 17th century. In contrast to his predecessors, who opted for colourful seascapes full of anecdotal details, Porcellis brought consistency to his paintings and made the weather visible with his clouds and dramatic lighting effects. With subtle shades of brown and grey, he succeeds in depicting the forces of nature.
At the beginning of his career, he painted marines in Vroom’s Mannerist style with its prominent greens, and he was also clearly influenced by Jan Breughel the Elder (1568-1625). This early and very unusual painting by Jan Porcellis is an excellent example of this.
A previuosly undocumented painting by Jan Porcellis. The painting will be included in the upcoming monograph of Dr. G. de Beer.
