THE DEFEAT OF THE SPANISH FLEET AGAINST A COMBINED DUTCH-ENGLISH NAVY
In 1602, King Philip II ordered Frederico Spinola to equip eight large galleys to sail from Seville to the North Sea to reinforce Archduke Albert’s fleet. The aim was to clear English, Dutch, Zeeland waters of the activities of the Dutch and English and to clear the port of Ostend. Two galleys were already lost on the Spanish coast; the rest of the fleet was destroyed in the naval battle. The subject of this print is the naval battle between the Spanish galleys and the combined Dutch-English fleet.
Johannes Rem’s print served as a source of inspiration for Hendrick and Cornelis Vroom: in 1617, they produced the painting Hollandse schepen overzeilen Spaanse galleien onder de Vlaamse kunst, 3 October 1602. The engraving was a commission from the States General to Johannes Rem to commemorate the illustrious victory over the Spaniards.
The most important maritime print of the early Baroque, bearing an undocumented verse.
Only seven other copies of both states are known.
