Description
According to Houbraken, Allart van Everdingen was a pupil of Roelant Savery in Utrecht and Pieter de Molijn in Haarlem. In 1644, he made a trip to Norway and Sweden. He returned to the Netherlands in early 1645 and married Janneke Brouwers in Haarlem. In 1646, he joined the guild in Haarlem and in 1648 joined the militia of Sint Joris. Van Everdingen left for Amsterdam in 1652, where he acquired citizenship. In Amsterdam, he worked for the Trip family, among others.
The inventory taken after his death in 1675 shows that he was probably also active as an art dealer. He owned works by Raphael, Titian, Frans Hals and Rembrandt, among others. Allart van Everdingen specialised in marines and Scandinavian landscapes. Although waterfalls had previously been depicted in landscapes by other masters, he ensured that the theme gained a permanent place in Dutch landscape painting. Cesar Boethius, Allart van Everdingen’s brother, was also a painter, but he specialised in history paintings.
