CORNELIS LEONARDSZ. STOOTER
SHIPPING ON THE COAST
Cornelis Leonardsz. Stooter quickly made name as marine painter in Leiden and he had contact with the famous marine painter Jan Porcellis. According to the city archives Stooter sold a piece of land and a house in 1629 to the wealthy Porcellis. The question however is, if he was a pupil of this master, because there is a lack of clear evidence there.
Stooter was an important figure in the art scene in Leiden in the middle of the 17th century. He was one of the founders of the famous St. Lucas Guild in 1648 and held the post of master and deacon several times.
Cornelis Stooter died on 4 September 1655 and was buried in the Pieterskerk in Leiden. He had one son, Leonard Cornelisz Stooter, who became a landscape painter. He was registered in 1656 in the Guild of Antwerp and died there in 1692.
