FRANS HUYS after PIETER BRUEGHEL I
WARSHIP WITH THE INSCRIPTION ‘DIE SCIP 1564’.
Probably commissioned by the publisher Hieronymus Cock, Pieter Brueghel drew a number of ship types around 1561-1562 as an example for the engraver Frans Huys. A total of eleven different prints by Huys after Brueghel are known.
On the upper wulf of the hulk two coats of arms are visible: to port a shield with the coat of arms of Amsterdam, to starboard that of Enkhuizen. At the top of the main mast the red-white-red flag of Hoorn blows, on the foremast a flag with the Burgundian or St. Andrew’s cross and on the ridge of the mizzeneau a (signal) pennant.
