The originally Flemish painter Jan Porcellis can be counted as one of the most important sea painters from the beginning of the seventeenth century. He is the founder of the so-called “Tonalistische School”. The series shows some of the most common flat-bottomed boats from around 1630. The ship types depicted are highly accurate and represent a valuable source for ship historians.
