Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek was in the first decades of the 19th century working as a master draughtsman in Middelburg, in which capacity he has trained a whole generation of local artists. Among them are besides his sons Barend Cornelis and Marinus Adrianus, Johannes and Hermanus also the brothers Johannes Cornelis and Lodewijk Haccou and Cornelis Schimmel.
