The Haarlem marine painter Pieter Mulier the Elder preferred working on panel. The depiction of a threemaster placed on the horizon would become his trademark. In spite of his fame by life the artist soon fell in oblivion. His paintings used to be highly valued, as shows the inventory of arms dealer Laurens Mauritsz. Douci, made up on 18 January 1669 by Ferdinand Bol and Gerrit Uylenburgh. Works by Mulier found higher appraisal than ‘grauwtjes’ by his contemporary Simon de Vlieger, from whom the collection spanned none less than ten works. The museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, keeps several works by Mulier.
