On the left, the beacon (the ‘kaap’) on Vlieland is shown which is at the entrance to the Vlie.
This penpainting belongs to a group showing shipping off Vlieland near the large beacon that is shown in all the penpaintings. All are of an early period drawn by Van de Velde the Elder.
Van de Velde often visited Vlieland, where his brother-in-law Jacob Agenzs was commissioner of the Admiralty of Amsterdam.
