WILLEM VAN DE VELDE THE YOUNGER
PORTRAIT OF A DUTCH FRIGATE IN ISOMERTIC PERSPECTIVE
This remarkable drawing, a portrait of a small frigate in isometric perspective, served as a preparational study for one of the ships depicted in the famous painting in the Wallace Collection, London. The painting is regarded Van de Velde the Younger’s most important commission during his Amsterdam period (until 1672) and has always been associated with Cornelis Tromp, who may have been the commissioner. Michael S. Robinson about the Wallace picture: ‘This must be regarded one of the most important commissions carried out by The Younger’.
